I stayed 3 nights in Nimes, an extra night because there was/is sooo much to explore in this area. I took a train ride to Avignon to walk the walled city and see the palace of the Popes home to the Popes for 100 years (1309 to 1377) before they moved to the Vatican City. Avignon is a lovely place with narrow cobbled streets and lots of history. Stumbled upon an art exhibit in an old run-down church. So cool.
Avignon has it’s own roman bridge, Pont du Avignon. Well it’s half a bridge but still a mean feet of engineering what’s left of it. The city itself is a nice semi medieval place with narrow cobbled streets and little squares to enjoy a coffee and a chat. Avignon was a very important part of the Roman empire in this part of the world back in the day
